A pay-once pass can normally be paid by card without a PayPal account. The monthly subscription needs one, because PayPal does not offer card checkout for recurring payments.
Payment is handled by PayPal. Single payments — the $1 download and either Editor Pass — normally offer a card option and no PayPal account. The $10/month subscription does need one: PayPal does not offer guest card checkout for recurring payments. The subscription renews monthly until you cancel, and you can cancel at any time from your account page; cancelling stops the next payment and you keep access until the period you have paid for runs out.
