Friends, we have a big update — and we’re a little proud of it!
Over the past few weeks we’ve been rebuilding, piece by piece, the way Realbook displays sheet music. It was delicate (and occasionally very stubborn) work: rewriting the rendering engine, fixing dozens of tiny musical details that real musicians spot instantly, and making it all fly even on a phone on the go. Here’s what came out of it.
What’s new
- ⚡ Instant sheet-music loading. Smart caching shows the score right away, without waiting for the heavy engine to load.
- 📱 Great on mobile. The score now adapts to your screen width and rotation — notes stay readable, nothing spills off the edge.
- 🎚️ Transpose to any key. One tap to fit your voice or instrument. We sweated the details: correct accidentals, stem directions, slurs and triplet beams — all by the book.
- ▶️ Playback with repeats and endings. The player follows repeats, 1st and 2nd endings, D.C./D.S. and the coda — exactly as written.
- 🖨️ Print & PDF — for practice and gigs.
- ❤️ Your personal songbook — collect favorites into playlists.
Behind the scenes
Under the hood is a world-class notation engine plus a whole lot of our own tuning, so it looks and sounds the way a musician expects. Huge thanks to everyone who dropped by, tried things, hit bumps and told us “this bit looks off” — every report made Realbook better. It’s genuinely teamwork, and you’re part of the team. 🙏
What’s next
The best part is still ahead. We’re finishing a full online sheet-music editor — so you can not only view and transpose, but also edit arrangements, save your own versions, and build your personal real book. Some of the editor’s advanced features will be available via subscription, which we’ll unveil to everyone soon. Meanwhile, basic viewing, transposing, playback and PDF stay free for all.
Help Realbook grow
If you’re enjoying it, tell your fellow musicians and invite them to Realbook. The more of us there are, the faster we add songs and features. 🎶
Thank you for being with us. It only gets better from here!

New update is cool! Noticed that transposing and changing the octave is a little wonky. Some charts have transpose by interval, some have transpose to specific key. Most struggle to easily change the octave up or down within the same key. Some times slurs or ties are showing up as a really big line and hiding the notes. Thanks for all your hard work and love the site!
